Conferențiar:  CLAUDIU BACIU (I.P.P.A.R.)

Conferențiar: BÉLA MESTER (Institute of Philosophy of the Research Centre for the Humanities of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences)
Tema: „A general overview of Hungarian philosophy in the 19th century”
Linkul pentru accesul online:

In my lecture, I will offer an overview of the main periods and topics of the Hungarian philosophy in the ‘long 19th century’, within two symbolic milestones: from the beginning of the Controversy on Kant (1792), until the death of the founder of a school of neo-Kantian axiology, Károly Böhm (1911). I will place emphasis on several special features of Hungarian philosophy, e.g. the different religious cultural background of philosophy (Catholic, Lutheran and Calvinists schools); the role of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (established in 1825) in the formation of a secular philosophical culture, a modern philosophical terminology, and a public scholarly sphere out of the traditional institutions (schools and churches). I will offer an overview of the main consequences of this institutional background, e.g. the central importance of the philosophical controversies; a conscious self-reflection incarnated in the early historiography of Hungarian philosophy (from 1835), and a strong interest in social and political questions. In the last section of my lecture, I will touch several open questions: What is the reason why those particular philosophical trends are over- or under-represented in comparison with the neighbouring national philosophical cultures? How can be narrated the Hungarian (and any other East-Central European) philosophy within a European (and global) framework?

Conferențiar: KARIN DE BOER (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
Tema: „From Kant’s metaphysics of metaphysics to Fichte’s philosophy of philosophy”
Linkul pentru accesul online:

In his 1781 letter to Herz, as is well known, Kant referred to the type of philosophy carried out in the Critique of Pure Reason as a metaphysics of metaphysics. He conceived of this metametaphysics as a critical investigation into the conditions under which metaphysics can be turned into a science. Yet Kant did not clarify to what extent the investigation carried out in the Critique proceeded scientifically itself, and many of his contemporaries doubted it did. This problem motivated Reinhold’s and Fichte’s projects in a crucial way. Rather than examining their solutions, this paper seeks to foreground a shift from the more or less implicit conception of philosophy contained in the Critique to the explicit metaphilosophical reflections put forward in Fichte’s 1794 Concerning the Concept of the Wissenschaftslehre. In this text, I argue, Fichte seeks to clarify the idea of a doctrine of science itself as well as the means required to actualize it, but abandons Kant’s idea of a separate, preparatory, critique intended to determine the boundaries within which metaphysics is possible. In this way, Fichte contributed to the eclipse of the idea of critique in German idealism.

Conferențiar: ION TĂNĂSESCU (I.F.P.A.R.)

The international conference PICASSOEST: USES AND ABUSES OF PICASSO IN EASTERN EUROPE, 1945-1989 will take place on January 5, 2024, in the “Ion Heliade Rădulescu” Amphitheater of the Romanian Academy Library. It is organized by MARe/Museum of Recent Art and the Constantin Rădulescu-Motru Institute of Philosophy and Psychology of the Romanian Academy, in partnership with the French Institute, Goethe Institute, Czech Center, and the Polish Institute in Bucharest.
The conference is part of a series of events related to the “THE PICASSO EFFECT” exhibition held at the MARe/Museum of Recent Art from September 28, 2023, to January 22, 2024.

Throughout the day, both through the keynote lecture of Professor Uwe Fleckner (University of Hamburg) – “Education for a Democratic Gaze: Pablo Picasso's Munich Exhibition from 1955” - and through other presentations in the conference PICASSOEST: USES AND ABUSES OF PICASSO IN EASTERN EUROPE, 1945-1989, Picasso's work, figure, psychology, public attitude, and the aesthetic, ideological, and political impact of Pablo Picasso's work will serve as a genuine reflective lens through which participants will approach a critical historical period: the post-war era.
A true tour de force in the philosophy of history, the international conference PICASSOEST: USES AND ABUSES OF PICASSO IN EASTERN EUROPE, 1945-1989 will explore the temptations, practices, and theories of totalitarian aesthetics, as well as the complexity of instrumentalizing Picasso's work in a global pedagogy of freedom, from the perspective of democratic societies. Together, the contributions will shape a universe of debate on an intensely relevant theme: the always ambivalent relationships between freedom of expression and propaganda, liberation and manipulation, aesthetic vision, and authoritarian discourse.

Whitehead and Idealism
International Online Conference: Bucharest, Romania, 1-2 October 2024
Organizer: Constantin Rădulescu-Motru Institute of Philosophy and Psychology of the Romanian Academy, Department of Western Philosophy

Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947), the celebrated British philosopher, mathematician and logician, studied and spent the first part of his teaching career in Cambridge. He was friends with W.R. Sorley, an idealist thinker, to whom he probably owed his initiation to philosophical thinking. As a graduate student he read Kant, Lotze, and Bradley, the foremost British defender of absolute idealism. As a member of the Cambridge Apostles and a junior academic he was around philosophers of idealist leaning, such as James Ward, of whom he saw a good deal, and the young G. F. Stout. He became friends with J.M.E. McTaggart, the greatest of the British personal idealists, and also an important Hegel commentator. Later, he was close to Lord Haldane, another idealist influenced by Hegel. The philosophical ambiance in which Whitehead’s thinking evolved, before the turn of the century, was idealistic.

He was seriously exposed to realism only after Russell followed Moore in his crusade against idealism, and Whitehead started collaborating with Russell. At first Whitehead was a spectator of the realist revolution in philosophy, but eventually he participated in it, during his London period, and was perceived as a member of the Neorealist school, alongside Samuel Alexander and Thomas Percy Nunn. He developed a highly original philosophy of physics, free from metaphysical considerations, i.e., independent of any doctrine concerning ‘the synthesis of the knower and the known.’ As one of the leading British specialists in Einstein’s theory of relativity, he took a position against those who thought this, the most advanced physical theory of the day, provided support for idealism.
However, when he became a metaphysician, he didn’t wholly reject idealism, nor did he ignore it as a hangover of the past, but claimed to transform ‘some main doctrines of Absolute Idealism onto a realistic basis.’ Thus Whitehead explicitly set his grand metaphysical system in the prolongation of the idealist tradition, not without acknowledging, at the same time, heavy obligations to the British and American realist schools. But what does this ‘transformation’ amount to? What is the depth and spread of the influence idealism - absolute, personalist, panpsychist, British or German, classical or contemporary - had on Whitehead’s metaphysical thinking? As an exponent of the ‘meeting of extremes in contemporary philosophy,’ in Bosanquet’s terms, did Whitehead apply Lotze’s dictum that ‘only inquiries conducted in the spirit of realism will satisfy the wishes of idealism?’ Is his metaphysical scheme a sui generis vindication of absolute idealism?
That Whitehead is a part of the idealist tradition seems to be further confirmed by the fact that the last Mohican of absolute idealism, Timothy Sprigge, discussed, adopted or transformed some main doctrines of the philosophy of organism.
The intention behind the organization of this conference is to give scholars interested in these and related aspects of Whitehead’s philosophy the opportunity to discuss and assess the relevance of the various strands of the idealist tradition to Whitehead’s metaphysics and to process metaphysics generally, as well as the relevance of process-relational philosophy to present day anti-materialist explorations in general metaphysics and philosophy of mind.
