Title: „On Feelings and the Will in the School of Brentano: A Survey and Reassessment”

In my talk I want to explore some parts of the Brentanian theory of mind by focusing on the question of how to understand feelings and desires within Brentano’s classificatory program of mental phenomena. Brentano famously argued in favour of three classes of mental phenomena in which feelings and the will are classified as a unitary class of so-called love-and-hate phenomena. Brentano’s arguments, however, are questionable. They were critically assessed by, among others, Ehrenfels and Twardowski. In my talk I want to present a survey of all three approaches by analysing their arguments. In particular, Brentano’s arguments will be analysed, followed by their critical assessment formulated by Ehrenfels, including his disjunctive account of feelings and desires, and Twardowski’s view of the classificatory program. In addition, Twardowski’s idea that desires are based upon feelings will be analysed. Against this background, the paper examines arguments in favour of the intentional theory of feelings and pleasure-based theories of desire.
